2022 Winter Olympics: Who Will Be Hosting? Choices Narrow Down To China And Kazakhstan

It seems that no country wants to host the 2022 Winter Olympics.

Just recently, the Polish city of Krakow withdrew its bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympics after residents vehemently expressed their disinterest for the plan.

According to the Associated Press, Krakow originally proposed to co-host the games with Slovakia, but more than 50% of voters in Krakow voted against it and said they did not want to host the event.

Other cities to reject the opportunity to host 2022 Winter Olympics include Stockholm, Sweden, Munich, Davos and St. Moritz.

No particular reason was given for the cities' rejections, but there are speculations that it is because of the hefty cost of hosting the Olympics. Based on figures from the recent Olympics in Sochi and Beijing, total spending for each amounted to almost $51B and $40B respectively.

Although there are still four countries bidding to host the games, it seems that only Kazakhstan and Beijing are the most likely to not withdraw their bids. The other two cities namely Oslo in Norway and Lviv in Ukraine have slim chances of accepting the hosting gig due to possible opposition and political factors.

Beijing might also be the best bet since it seeks to become the first city to host both the Summer and Winter Olympics, after hosting the 2008 Summer Olympics.

The Winter Olympics is a major sporting event worldwide that happens once every four years. Skiing, Ice Hockey, Snowboarding and Skating are among the most watched events in the Winter Olympics. Pyeongchang, South Korea has been chosen to be the host of the next Winter Olympics in 2018.
