Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet are already filming 'Insurgent,' the second installment of the Divergent franchise down in Atlanta. Naomi Watts is said to be joining the all star cast, which includes Octavia Spencer, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, Maggie Q and Mekhi Phifer.
Lionsgate studios announced on Tuesday June 2 that principal photography for the film began down in Atlanta. The new film will hit theaters March 20, 2015.
The plot of Insurgent features Tris (Woodley), Four (James), Peter (Teller) and Caleb (Elgort) as fugitives on the run; they are being hunted by Jeanine (Winslet), the leader of the Erudite elite.
A Lionsgate release about the "Insurgent" plot reads: "Racing against time, they must find out what Tris's family sacrificed their lives to protect, and why the Erudite leaders will do anything to stop them. Haunted by her past choices but desperate to protect the ones she loves, Tris, with Four at her side, faces one impossible challenge after another as they unlock the truth about the past and ultimately the future of their world."
Naomi Watts has also joined Insurgent according to the Hollywood Reporter. Watts will soon join the rest of the cast in Atlanta to start work. The "Diana" actress has scored the role of Evelyn, leader of the Factionless. The Factionless are the people who weren't selected for any of the various factions, or were dismissed from the factions in which they were originally in.
Watts isn't just signed for "Insurgent," she will also star in both of the films that Lionsgate/Summit will make from Veronica Roth's final book of the trilogy, Allegiant. Allegiant -- Parts 1 & 2, is due to be released March 18, 2016 and March 24, 2017.
Shailene Woodley is set to make an appearance on Bravo's upcoming show Top Chef Duels. Based on the original Top Chef, Top Chef Duels is a cooking show with duel-style challenges. The "Divergent" actress will guest judge one of the competitions along with main judges Curtis Stone and Gail Simmons. Top Chef Duels premieres on Wednesday, August 6 @ 10PM ET/PT on Bravo.
