With strong competition in the Group G bracket with Portugal and Germany, every advance point is critical. Though the Black Stars have accepted the title as underdogs, they still prove to be one of the best African teams in the tournament.
"We have been rated as underdogs in the group, which we are happy about. For the past four, eight years, we have been written about as underdogs, but we always prove people wrong," said 23-year-old Ghana player Jonathan Mensah, who helped the team in an unexpected victory against Brazil last FIFA 2009 World Cup Finals.
"Ghana are 37th in latest FIFA ranking. Their group opponents are 2nd (Germany), 4th (Portugal) + 13th (USA)," posted Gabriele Marcotti (@Marcotti) on Twitter, June 6.
"It's going to be like a revenge [match] for the United States, because we beat the United States in 2006 and we beat them in 2010. And once again we're playing them in the first game. For the first game of the competition, everybody is focused and nervous, so it's going to make the game very, very interesting," Mensah added truthfully.
And he couldn't be more right. The Black Stars defeated USA in group play last World Cup 2006, and once again in the quarterfinals match of the World Cup 2010. The Stripes and Stars team is more than hungry for their much-awaited victory.
Though both the teams are considered underdogs in the deadly bracket of G, the pressure can still build up so intensely, anything can happen. Plus, with some favourites such as Spain and England losing their first campaigns, it can be hard to tell whether these favourites can still live up to their titles.
