Frankie Edgar's next fight against BJ Penn could lead to him getting a title shot. "The Answer" also says that he is ready to take on the top competition in the featherweight division.
"The Answer" will be facing "The Prodigy" for the third time at The Ultimate Fighter 19 Finale, which, is scheduled to take place on July 6th in Las Vegas. Frankie Edgar won both fights against BJ Penn, both of which were championship fights.
For Frankie Edgar, coming into his next fight gives him to motivation to come out victorious, and he believes that the competitive nature of the fight will work to his advantage.
"It's the competitive nature of B.J. (Penn), you know. I'm a competitor myself, and I guess those wins that I have over him still sting on him, and he just wants a chance to get back at it," Edgar said in an interview with Submission Radio.
Frankie Edgar's fuel to win his next fight is his belief that winning against BJ Penn could put him in contention for José Aldo's featherweight title. He also believes that the two victories that he also holds over his opponent give him a slight edge.
"My motivation is, I just want to get back to the title," Edgar continued. "You know, in order to do that I'm gonna have to win every fight in front of me. And just the fact that I don't wanna lose the third time out. I won twice (against B.J.), for sure I don't wanna lose the third time out."
While he exudes the confidence being a former champion himself, Frankie Edgar is not looking past the competitive landscape. Currently, he sees fellow 145-pound contender Conor McGregor as another potential good fight for him.
"If he makes it to that point where we can meet, yeah of course," Edgar added. You know, I think he's a good fighter, I think he has a lot of potential, he knows how to promote himself, he knows how to put himself in the media. So he's got all the tools."
