Marvel time-travels to the early eighties with "X-men Apocalypse" 2016, a standalone installment which follows through on the events of "X-men: First Class" and "X-Men: Days of Future Past."
Time travel has been a recurring element in Marvel's graphic novels. With the company making its transition into full-length feature films, its attempts to recreate the universe on screen carries through, slow and steady.
Bryan Singer has been confirmed to direct the new installment, dubbed "X-men: Age of Apocalypse." Details of the plot are mostly speculation, except for the news it'll be set in 1983, ten years after the events of "X-Men: Days of Future Past."
Marvel's knack for playing with timelines, especially in the way characters were switched and crossed in "X-Men: Days of Future" past, creates room for countless possibilities. "X-Men: Apocalypse" will see Magneto and Xavier in their middle ages, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy aged 20 years after their first appearance in "X-men: First Class."
Marvel insider Simon Kinberg labeled the new X-Men film installment as a disaster movie, with scale larger than "Days of Future Past." As the title suggest, the film will introduce the super-villain Apocalypse into the franchise.
Director Bryan Singer also plans to bring Gambit and Nightcrawler back into the fold and the forefront. Unconfirmed reports peg Channing Tatum in the role of the card and staff-wielding mutant, while an actor to fill the teleporter's shoes is yet to be revealed.
The new X:men movie will resolve the issues left by the previous installment, especially the state of the world ten years after the Sentinel threat was averted. Returning characters Wolverine, Mystique and Beast resume their pivotal roles.
Younger versions of Storm, Cyclops, and Jean Grey enroll in Xavier's School, and Quicksilver will assume a more significant role in the story. "X-men Apocalypse" 2016 is slated for a May 27, 2016 release, reported to screen on the same season as the third installment to the "Wolverine" movie series, with Hugh Jackman.
