As of the June 25, Ed Sheeran's new album has been flying off the shelves. It is predicted to outsell all other albums out in the market, even Coldplay's album which sold more than 168,000 copies since being released in May.
'X' is the singer's second album after his wildly successful debut '+'. Official Chart Company has released data that reveals that Sheeran's album sold almost 100,000 copies in the first 48 hours it hit the market.
At the mid-week point since its release, the album's sales nearly matched the entire first week sales of his first album back in 2011 -- which sold 102,000 copies in less than a week.
Sheeran's popularity can also be seen in the Official Singles Chart, with five the 23-year old's tracks on the midweek Top 40. "Thinking Out Loud" at 20, "Don't" at 31 and "Photograph" at 34. "Sing," a former number one single is now at number 3, while another song "One" is at the 21st spot.
The singer-songwriter first gained attention upon the release of his extended play recording No. 5 Collaborations Project. Musicians such as Elton John and Jaimie Foxx took notice, and soon after he was signed on by Asylum Records.
Two of the songs from his debut album, "The A Team" and "Lego House" are both certified quintiple platinum in the UK.
Sheeran gained a foothold in the US starting in 2012 when wrote songs for One Direction and was a guest artist in Taylor Swift's Red album. His songs also appear on the soundtrack to the movie, The Fault In Our Stars. At the 56th Grammy Awards, Sheeran was nominated for Best New Artist.
As if Sheeran needed any more help in boosting his sales, now even Taylor Swift herself has urged fans to buy the British singer-songwriter's album.
Swift posted a photo on Instagram of Sheeran and her cat Meredith, with the caption: "If you're on the fence about buying Ed's new album, X, allow me to convince you with this image."
Sheeran and Swift were rumored to be dating before because of their collaboration in Swift's album, but Sheeran has denied the reports.
