Portugal manages to defeat Ghana 2 - 1 at Estadio Nacional de Brasilia in Brasilia Thursday, and neither of the two teams will advance to the second round of the tournament.
Portugal scored a point when Ghana's John Boye made an own-goal on the 30th - minute mark of the match, but it was soon equalized as Asamoah Gyan buries a header through a cross by Kwadwo Asamoah on the 57th - minute mark.
Nevertheless, Cristiano Ronaldo takes the lead once more for Portugal as he attacks with a left-footed shot and nets the ball on the 80th - minute mark.
Despite Portugal's victory over Ghana, the team will not advance to the next round of the tournament. Under Group G, Germany tops the group with 7 points after their 1 - 0 victory against USA; meanwhile, both USA and Portugal are both on a tie with 4 points each.
However, USA ranks second as they have a higher goal difference which allowed them to move on to the round of 16. Portugal would have needed three more points if they were to advance.
Cristiano Ronaldo comments on the result of the match at BBC Sports: "We created many opportunities but we could not finish them all. We knew we had to score three goals and we were depending on the result of the Germany game."
"We knew it was complicated but what's left at the end shows that it was possible considering the number of opportunities we created during the game," he adds.
Meanwhile, coach Paulo Bento of Portugal laments about the team's loss in the tournament. "It's a tough time for us and we feel down as we all wanted to qualify for the Round of 16. We must now grow and advance so that we don't feel the same in 2016," he says in BBC Sports.
Group G's Germany will face Algeria at Estadio Beira-Rio in Porto Algere on Monday, while USA matches up against Belgium at Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador on Tuesday.
