The Star Trek 3 Movie 2016 is helmed by a new director, taking fans and audiences into a place J.J. Abrams hasn't ventured before: the uncharted frontier of deep space.
Roberti Orci is taking over the directorial role in the next Star Trek installment franchise, which appears to go beyond the trilogy. The film series enjoyed several successes in the past, the television shows also with strong to moderate viewership.
J.J. Abram's reboot of the Star Trek movie franchise revived interest in the saga, though, with the first release well-received by Trekkies and the general audience. "Star Trek: Into Darkness" was acclaimed, but didn't do well at the box offices.
The first two films were Earth-bound and Earth-centric, an appeal that was closer to home for audiences. Orci confirmed in an interview earlier this week that a new Star Trek film is in the works, and the adventure takes Kirk and Spock into deep space this time.
Star Trek 3 Movie 2016 follows through on the wrap-up of "Into Darkness," with the USS Enterprise bracing to venture into new frontiers. Orci wrote the screenplay for the film and confirms the crew of the Starship will go on a five-year mission.
"In [Into Darkness] they set out finally where the original series started. The first two films - especially the 2009 [Star Trek] - was an origin story. It was about them coming together. So they weren't the characters they were in the original series. They were growing into them and that continues on in the second movie. So in this movie they are closer than they are to the original series characters than you have ever seen. They have set off on their five-year mission. So their adventure is going to be in deep space."
The Star Trek 3 Movie 2016 coincides with the series' 50th Anniversary (mstarz.com).
