Robert Downey Jr son Indio was arrested Sunday on account of drug possession, and is currently out on bail; Robert Downey has been privately struggling with his son's addiction, with moderate progress.
Sgt. Dave Valentine of West Hollywood Sheriff Station issued an official statement of the incidents that led to the arrest.
"Indio Downey was a passenger in a vehicle stopped around 2 p.m. Sunday. Downey was found to be in possession of what officers believed to be cocaine as well as a smoking pipe. Downey was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia, and posted bail around 9 p.m. that same evening."
The arrest is considered a slip in Indio's progress, who's reported to be clean for a long stretch, but is in and out of treatment and rehabilitation programs for the last few years.
Downey is grateful for the authorities' intervention, according to a representative. Robert Downey Jr son Indio has been struggling to overcome the addiction, and his father is always with him, looking forward to his recovery.
It's unfortunate addiction tendencies are inherited, though. According to Downey's rep: "Also, there is a lot of family support and understanding, and we're all determined to rally behind him and help him become the man he's capable of being. We're grateful to the Sheriff's department for their intervention, and believe Indio can be another recovery success story instead of a cautionary tale." (cnn.com)
Downey himself has battled addiction in the height of his career, in the 1990s. He's gone through treatment programs several times, serving a year in the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison. He became officially clean by 2001.
A source says Robert Downey's past battles with addiction helped in his son Indio's struggles. "Because of Robert's own struggle he's very much in tune with his son's sobriety. And that has really helped Indio."
Robert Downey Jr son Indio has also seen his father help people with their own struggles, notably Mel Gibson (tmz.com).
