LA Lakers news is buzzing now that free agency has started as the team is meeting with Carmelo Anthony. The team also sent feelers to Lebron James' agent Rich Paul, even if it's not considered as favorites to land the NBA's best player.
According to a tweet by ESPN's Ramona Shelbourne who shared LA Lakers news on June 30: "The Lakers registered interest in Carmelo Anthony tonight and will be meeting with him on Thursday, source tells ESPN."
Carmelo Anthony has been doing his due diligence since declaring for free agency as he met Chicago Bulls execs on Tuesday, then the Houston Rockets and the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday. After the LA Lakers, the 6-8 forward will talk with New York Knicks to see their offer, said Marc J. Spears of Yahoo Sports.
According to the blogsite SilverScreenAndRoll, the LA Lakers have the cap space to sign Carmelo Anthony to a max contract. However, the New York Knicks have the advantage of giving him guaranteed money for an extra year.
The site added that LA Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant plans to be involved in the recruiting process because he is friends with Carmelo Anthony. The New York City native also has a home in Los Angeles along with his wife and two kids.
The former Knick supposedly will make the decision by the second week of July,Yahoo Sports added.
In other LA Lakers news, the team already contacted Lebron James' agent Rich Paul.
Brian Windhorst wrote at ESPN.com that the three-time MVP will not meet with teams to hear their respective offers and instead authorized his agent Rich Paul to handle the initial talks.
Lebron James is expected to seek a max-level extension and aside from the LA Lakers, the other teams interested in signing the 6-8 forward are the Dallas Mavericks, Miami Heat, Phoenix Suns, Philadelphia 76ers, Orlando Magic and the Utah Jazz. ESPN reported that these are the teams with the cap flexibility to go after the game's best player.
