BJ Penn news features "The Prodigy's" formal announcement of his retirement right after his devastating third round TKO loss to former lightweight champion Frankie "The Answer" Edgar.

The two men coached against each other at the 19th installment of The Ultimate Fighter reality show, wherein "The Answer" emerged as the winning coach. Afterwards, both former 155-pound champions met inside the cage for the third and would-be final time, wherein Frankie Edgar emerged as the more dominant fighter.

From the get-go, BJ Penn was stiff and apprehensive with his shots, while Frankie Edgar came with his usual slick boxing style and head movement. The fight ended after "The Answer" landed an elbow that opened up a cut above "The Prodigy's" right eye.

Frankie Edgar capitalized on BJ Penn's vulnerable state on the ground and began to rain down punches on his downed opponent. With "The Prodigy" unable to defend himself, referee Herb Dean had no choice but to step in and put the fight to a halt.

Prior to the fight, UFC President Dana White formally made a statement saying that should BJ Penn lose this fight, he will urge the former two-division champion to completely walk away from the sport.

"This is BJ Penn's last fight possibly," White said in an interview with FOX Sports 1 regarding the BJ Penn news. "If he wins, we'll see what he does from there, but if he loses, I will actually push for him to retire."

"It could be possibly watching Michael Jordan playing his last basketball game," he added. "It could be Tiger Woods' last golf game."

BJ Penn news also reveals that "The Prodigy" made the formal announcement himself at the post-fight interview with Jon Anik.

"Frankie did a great job," he said in a report by Bloody Elbow regarding the BJ Penn news. "I shouldn't have came back, I shouldn't have been in the ring tonight."

BJ Penn ended his career with a record of 16-10, with 2 draws.
