With "The Purge 2 Anarchy" release date just a week away, fans of the first film expect director James DeMonaco to perfect the plot, and it looks like the sequel is off on the right track.
"The Purge" released last year as a much-anticipated movie, and indeed, the trailer offered a very different twist to the usual fare of slasher suspense thrillers. Universal Pictures managed to drum up significant hype, but DeMonaco failed to exploit and maximize the plot.
The Purge is an annual event in a fictitious, utopian America. In exchange for the peace enjoyed by citizens throughout the year, the government implements a 12-hour period where all crime is permitted, from petty to heinous. Citizens have a choice to either join the mayhem or ride it out in the safety of their reinforced homes.
Ethan Hawke's character operates a security firm in the first film, and the story focused on how the annual Purge affected his family when his fool-proof home security system was breached.
Some critics insist DeMonaco could have explored more on the concept of the Purge, complaining the resolution of the first film was a serious letdown. "The Purge 2 Anarchy" release date intends to set things right a la Grand Theft Auto style, with the focus of the events of the Purge happening on the streets.
The sequel stars Frank Grillo as Leo, a hardened police sergeant out for revenge on Purge night. He runs into unlikely companions which throw a monkey-wrench on his vigilante plans, and their small group eventually fights for survival, unaware that some of them have ulterior motives.
The trailer looks just as promising as the first, revealing a broader bird's eye view of the events of The Purge across the city, as well as the distorted plans of the people participating in it. "The Purge 2 Anarchy" release date is on July 18 (comingsoon.net).
