"Maleficent" star Elle Fanning is currently in talks to star in a film adaptation of Neil Gaiman's short story, "How To Talk To Girls In Parties," reports The Hollywood Reporter.

"How To Talk To Girls In Parties," published by Gaiman in 2006, is about two teenage boys who stumble into a party in 1970s Croydon, London. While one has no problem approaching girls, the other boy has to struggle to make conversation. The two of them soon discover that the girls in the party are more than they seem.

Elle Fanning will play a girl in the party who turns out to be an alien exploring the supposedly most dangerous area in the galaxy, which just so happens to be Croydon.

The story won the Locus Award for best short story and was also nominated in the prestigious Hugo Award for the same category.

John Cameron Mitchell will be directing and co-writing the screenplay with Philippa Goslet, in addition to being one of the producers of the sci-fi movie. He is known for directing and starring in the outlandish rock musical, "Hedwig And The Angry Inch." He also helmed Nicole Kidman's film, "The Rabbit Hole."

According to CinemaBlend, Mitchell has been developing the "How To Talk To Girls In Parties" project since 2010.

Howard Gertler, who was an Academy Award nominee for his documentary "How to Survive a Plague" will be producing the film with Gaiman and Mitchell.

Two of Gaiman's books, "Stardust" and "Coraline" have already been retold in the big screen. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Gaiman's acclaimed comic, "Sandman," is currently being developed by Warner Bros. Disney will also be producing an adaptation for the award winning young adult novel "The Graveyard Book," while FreemantleMedia is working on an "American Gods" series for Starz.

Fanning appeared in "Super 8" and "The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button". Her latest film, "Maleficent," where she stars alongside Angelina Jolie, has earned more than $600 million worldwide.

Michael J. Werner and Winnie Lau from Fortissimo Films are executive producing.
