Guillermo del Toro's recent comments suggest the Hellboy 3 release is a dud, throwing a wet blanket over fan frenzy and expectation.
Del Toro and Ron Perlman were very vocal in expressing their excitement for a Hellboy Trilogy of sorts, and the executives at Legendary Pictures are even collaborating with Universal on the project. Del Toro confirms he already has a plot in place for the next Hellboy movie, but doesn't think it'll ever see the light of the 3D movie screens.
His comment on the third film hinted of a confirmation at first, but is eventually a serious letdown:
"Well, you know, we don't have that movie on the horizon, but the idea for it was to have Hellboy finally come to terms with the fact that his destiny, his inevitable destiny, is to become the beast of the Apocalypse, and having him and Liz face the sort of, that part of his nature, and he has to do it, in order to be able to ironically vanquish the foe that he has to face in the 3rd film. He has to become the best of the Apocalypse to be able to defend humanity, but at the same time he becomes a much darker being. It's a very interesting ending to the series, but I don't think it will happen."
Del Toro is keen on a Hellboy 3 release if he had his way, but pegs the studios and the financial aspect of the project as reasons to opt out.
"Creatively, I would love to make it. Creatively. But it is proven almost impossible to finance. Not from MY side, but from the studio side. If I was a multimillionaire, I would finance it myself, but I spend all my money on rubber monsters."
It looks like the Hellboy 3 release will remain in the back burner of Hollwood projects. Here's hoping it doesn't turn out as another half-baked could've been (comicbook.com).
