"Fifty Shades of Grey" news updates are buzzing about Starz' CEO Chris Albrecht's revelation that the BDSM film could have been a TV series instead of a movie. Meanwhile, cast Dakota Johnson is confirmed to join adaptation of the novel "Forever, Interrupted."
During the Television Critics Association press tour on Friday, the Starz network CEO dished out "Fifty Shades of Grey" news to reporters when he revealed that he approached author E.L. James to adapt the trilogy into a TV series.
The erotic novel by E.L. James contains explicit scenes of domination, bondage and sado-masochism and if adopted into a TV series could rival the amount of nudity in "Game of Thrones."
Chris Albrecht was promoting the new series "Outlander," described by Entertainment Weekly as a "romantic fantasy with much softer sexual content that Fifty Shades," when he raised the topic about the film starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele, respectively.
"If you read the [Outlander] book, this could only be a series. I'm the guy who called up Universal and said, 'I'll get you three years on the air as a series-let's just do a Fifty Shades of Grey series,'" he said.
According to DigitalSpy, the network CEO told the studio that it doesn't have to worry about box office and rating, and they can tell the story the right way.
"But movie people think things should be movies, and authors think things should be movies. Because up until recently, movies have been the Tiffany jeweled crown. And certainly from what I see you people writing, that seems to be changing," he said.
In related "Fifty Shades of Grey" news, cast Dakota Johnson was tapped for "Forever, Interrupted,' which is a story about Elsie who elopes with a young man and suddenly finds herself as a widow. She then rekindles her relationship with her mother who helps her cope with grief.
