Which of these smartphones is the ideal purchase for consumers? We pit Apple's iPhone 5 against the Nokia Lumia 1020 to see which is better.
For the design and display, the Nokia Lumia 1020 has an AMOLED model display measuring 4.5 inches that can render a resolution of 768 x 1280 pixels. It weighs 158 g and has the following dimensions: 130.4 x 71.4 x 10.4 mm.
However, Apple's iPhone 5 has a smaller 4 inches IPS LCD display that is LED-backlit and can render a lesser resolution of 640 x 1136 pixels. It is lighter (weight: 112 g) and smaller (dimensions: 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm) than its competitor.
In terms of hardware and OS, the Nokia Lumia 1020 has a Krait: dual core processor working at 1.5 GHz which is paired up with a Snapdragon MSM8960 chipset from Qualcomm. It supports 2GB of RAM with 32GB of internal storage capacity (there is no microSD card slot, hence the memory is not expandable) and runs on the Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 OS (upgradable to WP8 Amber).
Meanwhile, the iPhone 5 has a Swift Arm v7: a dual core processor working at 1.3 GHz and has a Apple A7 model chipset. This smartphone comes with only 1GB of RAM but with multiple options of internal memory: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB (the handset does not include a microSD card slot – the memory is not expandable) and it runs on iOS 6 which is upgradable to iOS 7.
For battery usage and camera specs, the Nokia Lumia 1020 is equipped with the Li-Ion battery wit a capacity of 2000 mAh which is estimated to last 13 hours and 20 minutes of talking time (3G), while Apple's iPhone 5 has a Li-Po 1440 mAh battery unit which is estimated to last only 8 hours of talking time (3G).
The Nokia smartphone comes with a breath-taking 41MP rear-facing camera that has features like auto focus, manual focus, optical image stabilization and LED flash. The front-facing camera on this handset has 1.2MP.
As for the Apple unit, it also has a secondary camera of 1.2MP, but the primary camera has a 8MP with features like LED flash and autofocus.
The Nokia Lumia 1020 cost around $418.90, while the iPhone 5 (32 GB) cost $508.88.
