It was 2010 when "Pawn Stars" Big Hoss Corey Harrison got what he calls his "wake up call".
Then weighing 402 lbs and under preventive diabetes medication, one of the stars of History Channel's reality hit "Pawn Stars" decided it was time to shed off the extra pounds.
"Pawn Stars" Big Hoss Corey Harrison narrated at a feature for People magazine: "I literally drove straight from the doctor to the lap band center and had the surgery almost immediately".
The 31-year-old explained that the surgery was so expensive that he had to pay for the procedure with four credit cards, saying "It was something I had to do - I was not going to get diabetes!"
The surgery that Harrison underwent was a Gastric Band Procedure. It is defined by Medical Dictionary as a procedure wherein an inflatable silicone device called a laparoscopic adjustable gastric lap band is surgically implanted around the top portion of the stomach to help a person lose weight by curbing his appetite.
After going through the Gastric Band Procedure, Harrison lost 50 pounds in the first six weeks after the surgery, followed by another 100 pounds within the first year.
He describes the whole experience as a "WOW moment", saying "I could never go back to weighing as much as I did... It made me realize what I ate, how I ate and what I did to myself".
"Pawn Stars" Big Hoss Corey Harrison currently weighs 210 pounds and maintains it by having his lap band checked monthly.
He also credits his weight loss to his newfound healthy lifestyle. "I'm actually excited to go to the gym now. I box 12 rounds a day five days a week," Harrison said.
The reality TV star added: "When I was a teenager I loved snowboarding, but in my 20s I was too big to strap my feet in the boards. Being able to finally touch my toes made me realize I could snowboard again, so I went out and got new gear immediately."
"When I meet fans, they are always congratulating me on the weight loss," Harrison said.
