"Sherlock" Season 4 has been confirmed for a one-off Christmas special in December 2015 plus its usual three-episode run to most likely follow in January of 2016.

Fans have been elated with the news of a shorter wait time than the show's previous two-year hiatus for every season. The announcement was eventually met with questions and speculations about the new season, especially with Moriarty's implied return and death hoax in the season three finale.

Spoilers have surfaced regarding the upcoming new episodes. According to reports, the Christmas storyline might be based on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's seventh story in the 12 "The Adventure Of Sherlock Holmes" compilation, "The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle."

The story appropriately happens during Christmas time, when Holmes and Watson solve the mystery of the carbuncle ring found in the throat of a peasant that apparently belongs to the Countess of Morcar. The duo then looks for a "Mrs. Henry Baker" whom the peasant and its accompanying top hat should be sent to.

Martin Freeman, who plays Dr. Watson, previously dropped the bomb about the Christmas special for "Sherlock" season 4 before the actual confirmation.

He said during an interview, "Mark Gatiss may beat me up, but there is an idea for this one-off special that's such a good idea, and as I was listening to it I thought 'we've just got to do this.' And I don't know when we are going to be able to do it, unfortunately. It's a fantastic, really mouth-watering idea. But I really don't know when we are going to get to do it."

Both actors have a very busy lineup of upcoming movies for this year and the next.

Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) has been nominated at the 2014 Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie while Freeman was shortlisted for the Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie category.

The critically acclaimed Sherlock season three finale "The Last Vow" is vying for the Outstanding TV Movie award.
