At last, after three months of waiting, the much-anticipated Windows Phone 8.1 release date is now under way!

According to a report by GSM Arena, 'the new Windows Phone version has now begun rolling out to supported devices around the world'.

The report also indicated that instead of the higher end models, the WP 8.1 a.k.a. Cyan would first be released for the Lumia 635, a mid-tier which is no longer new to the public.

Also, it is confirmed that the Windows Phone 8.1 update would first be exclusive in Taiwan, Finland and Spain. No specific date has been announced and what countries and markets will get the chance to update. It is said that WP 8.1 will be maximized for supported devices including the highly popular Lumia 520 and its successor, the Lumia 525.

Nokia has been working with Windows Phone over the past four years and in recent sales reviews, there are no significant increase in market shares yet. Hopefully, the new Windows Phone 8.1 will entice more smartphone fans to get into the Windows Phone bandwagon.

Announced back in April during the BUILD conference, the new version of Microsoft's mobile platform boasts some new features which could be the game changers in the industry today.

According to Mobile Hub, aside from the new version number, WP Cyan also includes a notification center, a new customizable home screen, better touch-type keyboard, and the voice assistant Cortana. During the preview of the WP 8.1, both the Lumia 930 and Lumia 630 were announced. While the Lumia 630 and its numerous versions have already spread througout China, India and other markets, the Lumia 930 is still waiting to be deployed to its target markets.

Now that the update will soon be experienced by Nokia and Windows users, we will see if all the hype and waiting were worth it. The success or failure of this update should also tell us which direction Microsoft will be heading in the coming months.
