One of the biggest PC gaming debates in recent times is Dota 2 vs LOL. Many PC gamers debate about which of the two has the better gameplay, design and graphics. This article talks about the 2013 revenue of both games and the results are not even close!
Valve's popular online game Dota 2 is a hit with PC gamers as it apparently generated around $80 million in microtransaction revenues in 2013, according to industry intelligence firm SuperData Research. While that was enough to place in 13th for the year in terms of cash generated from selling virtual goods.
Dota 2 is the most-played game on Steam last year as it regularly has more than 500,000 players playing. That's a whole lot more than another of Valve's popular online game, Team Fortress 2. That shooter typically has around 50,000 to 60,000 concurrent players.
Despite that gap in the number of players, Team Fortress 2 earned more money than Dota 2 and brought in $139 million in microtransaction sales in 2013, according to SuperData. That's more than $50 million more than Dota 2.
While Dota 2 is doing well, according to SuperData's research, it has a long way to go to catch up to League of Legends. Riot Games' League of Legends earned over $624 million in microtransaction sales in 2013.
Though SuperData predicts Dota 2 revenue will increase this 2014.
"I anticipate Dota 2′s success will continue in 2014," SuperData analyst Joost van Dreunen said to an interview with GamesBeat. "Over the course of 2013, Dota 2 managed to triple monthly revenues. Considering the current momentum behind the MOBA category, we expect it to double monthly earnings by the end of 2014."
In Dota 2 and League Of Legends, players can purchase cosmetic items or skins that make their characters look different. League of Legends also allow players to buy characters so they don't have to grind for the characters.
When it comes to ranking Dota 2 vs LOL in sales for 2013 then LOL wins as LOL is the second highest earning online PC game in while Dota 2 is only in the 13th place.
So when it all comes down to it in revenue. Dota 2 vs LOL then for 2013, LOL wins and it wins big with more than $500 plus million more in revenue.
