The hair-raising horror of 2013's "The Conjuring" is back with a spinoff based on the film's evil doll, Annabelle.
Nicknamed as "The Conjuring 2," "Annabelle" features the origin story of the devil doll that the Warrens encountered in the first movie. Both films are themselves, based loosely on a true story of a doll inhabited by an evil spirit.
With Director James Wan's history of evil puppet-based movies ("Saw," "Dead Silence"), it was basically preemptive that "The Conjuring" would gain such recognition.
Screenrant reported that Annabelle's scary image was so striking that it created a prequel just for the doll's origin story. This time, however, "The Conjuring's" cinematographer will be directing the new film, while "Swamp Devil's" Gary Dauberman will be doing the screenplay.
The Conjuring 2's "Annabelle" trailer features a less aged-looking doll being gifted to a heavily pregnant Lydia (Annabelle Wallis) by her husband, John (Ward Horton). She seems delighted by the present but the horror starts as night falls.
"Annabelle's" genesis seems to be from being "infected" by the spirit of Lydia and John's psychotic attacker (who has an unhealthy penchant for scary-looking dolls and stabbing pregnant ladies).
Based on the trailer, Screenrant reports that the story will be based on the first couple who owned the cursed doll before being passed on to the college students Donna and Angie (whose story was told in flashback in the first movie) and eventually the Warrens.
Warner Bros., however, has not yet released an official synopsis of the film.
"Annabelle" will reportedly be one-third of a series of micro-budget spinoffs based on the Warrens' supernatural encounters and will hit theaters on October 3rd this year.
Along with the first teaser, Warner Bros. has also released a poster of the film with the doll sporting a scary grin and staring straight ahead with what looks like blood dripping from its eyes.
