A new movie about J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and C.S. Lewis, the man behind The Chronicles of Narnia will be coming out soon. The two British authors are giants in literature, especially in the realm of fantasy fiction. And they also happen to be really good friends.
This close, personal relationship between the two will be the new film's focus, according to a report by Entertainment Weekly. The new film, with a budget of $18 million is dubbed, Tolkien & Lewis, and will be produced by the UK based Attractive films.
The official description of this J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis film is "a drama fantasy set in war torn Britain in 1941, revealing faith, friendship, and rivalry." The movie is slated to be directed Simon West (The Expendables 2, Con Air) and Jacquieline Cook.
The two authors were known to be members of the elite literary circle, the Inkling, which were composed of writers associated with Oxford University. The group met regularly during the years of the 1930s and 1940s. Both Tolkien and Lewis were also known for their Christian faith. It is a well-known story that it was Tolkien, who was a Catholic, who talked Lewis, who was an atheist, into rediscovering his faith. This rekindling of Lewis' Christian faith led to his books, The Chronicles of Narnia, Mere Christianity, The Great Divorce, and The Four Loves.
Another one of Lewis' works, Surprised by Joy, details his close relationship with The Lord o of the Rings author. He describes their friendship as follows," "When I began teaching for the English Faculty, I made two other friends, both Christians (these queer people seemed now to pop up on every side) who were later to give me much help in getting over the last stile. They were HVV Dyson ... and JRR Tolkien. Friendship with the latter marked the breakdown of two old prejudices. At my first coming into the world I had been (implicitly) warned never to trust a Papist, and at my first coming into the English Faculty (explicitly) never to trust a philologist. Tolkien was both."
Aside Tolkien & Lewis, another movie about the Lord of the Rings author is slated to be produced. Fox Searchlight's Tolkien is reported to be the author's biopic and will cover his life in the first World War, and his days as a university professor.
