In some sudden and inexplicable occurrence, a mysterious humongous hole has appeared in in part of Russia, Yamal (which literally means at the ‘end of the world’).Scientists immediately suspected it was caused by a large meteor. However, it has now been reported that the cause may be something more disturbing.
The crater is caused by rising temperatures on Earth, not a meteorite! "The rare geographical occurrence is 262ft wide and is caused by rising temperatures in the Earth’s core," said Andrei Plekhanov from Scientific Research Center of the Artic.
If the Earth itself is causing massive expanse of land to just get sucked up, imagine where else this could happen? Plekhanov, a senior researcher at the Scientific Research Center of the Arctic, said “the mysterious hole which appeared in the gas-rich area earlier this week was most likely the result of a 'build-up of excessive pressure' underground, due to the region's changing temperatures.” Plekhanov came to this hypothesis when he took a trip to the 262ft wide crater, in the Yamal Peninsula of northern Russia, to study how the crater was formed.
He also said there were no traces of an explosion, which is why a meteor has been ruled out. “The crater has more of an oval than a circular shape, it makes it harder to calculate the exact diameter. As of now our estimates is about thirty meters. If we try to measure diameter together with soil emission, the so-called parapet, then the diameter is up to sixty meters. The crater is from 50 to 70 meters deep,” said scientists.
He added that the enormous crater appears to be made up of 80% ice, which adds to the theory that it was caused by the effects of global warming, with gas exploding below the surface. The inner rim of the crater is dark in color, which suggests that there was 'severe burning', scorched the crater's edges, researchers said. There is also a body of water inside the crater, much like a lake.
