"How To Train Your Dragon 2" was well received by audiences and fans of the animation. However, new reports surfaced about the flick not doing that well on the box office.

Forbes contributor Scott Mendelson had this to say about the box office results, and why there was a certain expectation for the movie:
"Truth be told, I expected a bigger bump and a larger overall weekend. Despicable Me 2 jumped 48% from the original and Monsters University (admittedly with 12 years of inflation and 3D) jumped 31%. The question was just how much higher the sequel to the beloved original was supposed to climb compared to its predecessor. It's also below the $60m+ openings for Madagascar 2, Madagascar 3, and Kung Fu Panda, along with the $59m debut of Monsters Versus Aliens back in 2009. And its 2.7x weekend multiplier is well below the 3-3.5x DreamWorks Animation norm."
"How to Train Your Dragon earned $497m worldwide, a strong total but below the likes of the The Croods, the Kung Fu Panda films, and the Madagascar pictures. We assumed that the sequel would break out because we loved it so much, but perhaps the film itself played better with critics then it did with general audiences."
"We may hold up the first film as the diamond in the rough, but DreamWorks arguably sees the Madagascar series as their flagship franchise. When you look at how DreamWorks uses its characters outside of the films themselves, it's the escaped zoo animals of Madagascar that dominate. They are the core characters for the DreamWorks Experience on the Royal Caribbean cruise ships and the core characters used for the likes of the Sea World "Operation Vacation" stage show. Madagascar has arguably been the gateway film for pushing the DreamWorks library into public consciousness as more than just movie characters."
