When Rory McIlroy won the British Open last Sunday at Royal Liverpool, his dad had every reason to celebrate not just because his son has done the family name proud, but because he cashed in $171,000 from a bet.
The website Ajc.com reported that based on the details recorded by the Landbrokes betting firm, Rory McIlroy's father has bet on the winning ticket at a 500-to-1 odds back in 2004. He wagered on Rory McIlroy winning at the British Open in 10 years time, which falls this year, 2014.
Espn.com added that some friends of the golfer's dad also get to experience a combined windfall worth $136,700 for their similar bets in 2005.
