PlayStation 4 owners can now download new PS4 firmware update, version 1.74, 194 MB.
Those who download new PS4 firmware update shouldn't expect significant changes in their system once it's installed, though. The download takes about a minute and quickly installed, and the changelog is straightforward: "System software stability during use of some features has been improved."
Version 1.74 is a routine update Playstation 4 owners shouldn't do without, but it isn't the one rumored to bring back the features phased out after the PlayStation 3. In comparison to Microsoft, Sony's firmware updates to its flagship console are released few and far in between.
Microsoft is practically pushing updates for the Xbox One on a monthly basis. Sony's updates are seldom by comparison; industry insiders speculate this as a sign of a well-rounded console; fewer updates mean the PlayStation 4 is reliable and low-maintenance, or so it seems.
Meanwhile, Microsoft's constant update releases have introduced numerous features. Though it's debatable if these will eventually make the Xbox One the superior next-gen console, the changes keep owners satisfied and in the loop.
Industry insiders are noticing the Xbox One updates are paying off, and the console is catching up on its main competitor. Sony seems to have caught wind and plans to release a major patch, after PlayStation 4 owners download new PS4 firmware update (v. 1.74).
Sony is tight-lipped on what version 1.8 will actually offer, and SCEE rep Fred Dutton only confirms to expect "more news on PS4 updates very soon," which isn't much of a tease.
A reliable informant confirms several of the much-requested features as part of the version 1.8 update, though, including the media playback feature left behind from the PlayStation 3. PS4 owners won't be limited to the Music Unlimited service, if the leak is legitimate.
For now, PlayStation 4 owners need to download new PS4 firmware update, and wait for version 1.8. The same source maintains v. 1.8 will be released before Gamescom, which happens August 13 to 17.
