Miguel Cotto's next fight is set to take place in December as he prepares to defend his WBC middleweight title for the first time with either Julio Cesar Chavez, Jr or Canelo Alvarez as opponent.
In a report by Boxingscene.com, the 33-year old Puerto Rican boxer has yet to finalize the details, which also answers the questions on where the fight will take place.
As of the moment, the newly crowned 160-pound champion is still on a celebratory mood after his most recent win against Sergio Martinez in early-June.
"I'm enjoying the last victory and most of all waiting to see what happens in my career," Cotto said. "At the moment I have not thought about anything. I'll let the tide take its course and see what it brings."
"Junito" dominated Sergio "Maravilla" Martinez in a one-sided seven-round bout, wherein he was able to knock his opponent down twice in the early rounds. Many of boxing observers and followers were impressed by his performance, including superstar Oscar De La Hoya.
"Cotto looked sensational at a higher weight class," De La Hoya said in an interview after the Cotto vs. Martinez fight. "He looked like a relentless attacking machine."
De La Hoya hinted that for Miguel Cotto's next fight, Canelo Alvarez could be the next opponent.
"I would love to work with Cotto Promotions on a possible Canelo-Cotto fight," he added.
Interestingly enough, the champion himself has welcomed the idea.
"There are many names on the list, obviously Canelo and Chavez stick out, but we are waiting [to see what happens]," Cotto said. "This is a business, my business and I will ensure the best opportunity for Miguel Cotto. But it is a fact, the Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry can be rekindled."
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has also been added to the list of opponents for Miguel Cotto's next fight. It is a match-up which his father, Chavez Sr., also entertained.
"I particularly like the fight and my son loves the fight," Chavez Sr. said. "Cotto loves to fight, and we'll see how things progress. Julio has many options, but he is willing."
