HBO has officially confirmed that its newest show will be based on Michael Crichton's 1973 movie called Westworld, which starred Yul Brenner as an android.

The adaptation of this movie was written by Jonathan Nolan (brother of Dark Knight director Christopher, who also co-wrote with him the upcoming sci-fi thriller Interstellar), and his wife Lisa Joy.

Meanwhile, J.J. Abrams, well-known for directing Mission Impossible and Star Wars Episode VII, has signed on to be the executive producer. Jerry Weintraub (Ocean's 11) is also an executive producer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter this new HBO show will be starring Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins,. Evan Rachel Wood will star alongside The Silence of the Lambs actor.

Based on the 1973 movie by Jurassic Park writer Michael Crichton, the newest HBO drama is said to be a "dark odyssey about the dawn of artificial consciousness and the future of sin."

Westworld was given the greenlight to begin work on its pilot episode last August. It is HBO's second TV series from Warner Bros. Television, the first one being the rapture-themed show Tom Perrotta's bestselling book, The Leftovers.

This new HBO show will be one of the cable channel's latest offerings, after a couple of its long running shows, such as Boardwalk Empire, The Newsroom, and True Blood end for good.

Hopkins will be starring as Dr. Robert Ford, the creative director, chief programmer, and chairman of the board of Westworld, a futuristic, Western-themed amusement park.

Dr. Ford is described as a genius leader, who will go to any lengths to make sure his vision for the park is made into reality. This will be Hopkins' first regular TV series role.

Meanwhile, Emmy nominee Wood will be playing Dolores Abernathy, a farm girl who will make some startling discoveries about the life she has lived in the frontier West.
