"I believe good things come to those who work their a***es off," crime journalist Jake Gyllenhaal says in the trailer for the new thriller movie, "Nightcrawler."
Coupled with his speech about being a "hard worker," a person with "high goals," and "persistent," the phrase seems perfectly fine, inspirational even, at the beginning. Later on, though, the nocturnal journalist takes his "love" for the job way too far.
He repeatedly says, "You have to get the money to buy the lottery ticket," throughout the trailer, each time growing increasingly harried, increasingly crazier.
The trailer follows an unemployed Gyllenhall discovering the world of nocturnal crime journalism. When he finally convinces a broadcast station to hire him, he sets out to do what he does best: being persistent.
However, he has a hard time getting scoops with police throwing him off crime scenes. He perseveres, until finally, he takes matters into his own hands-crashing into police cars and staging an accident for a story himself.
Released by Open Roads Films, Jake Gyllenhaal's "Nightcrawler" also stars Rene Russo, Bill Paxton, and Riz Ahmed.
The award-winning actor also produced the film together with Jennifer Fox, Tony Gilroy, David Lancaster, and Bold Films' chairman Michel Litvak.
This will be Dan Gilroy's directorial debut. He also wrote the script for the movie. His experience in Hollywood isn't simple either. His 20-year career in Tinsel Town includes co-writing for Dennis Hopper's comedy "Chasers" as well as the 1992 thriller "Freejack." He is also one of the contributing writers for the unreleased superhero film, "Superman Lives."
"Nightcrawler" was shot in Los Angeles and was allocated $2.3 million tax credit in California, according to Variety.
Jake Gyllenhaal's "Nightcrawler" will be shown in US theaters on October 17. The Toronto Film Festival, which will be running from September 4-14 will also be screening the film.
