The Andrew Garfield's "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" will not yet make a comeback on the big screen until 2018, as the poor showing on box-office compared to Sam Raimi-directed trilogy continue to be a challenge.
"The Amazing Spider Man 3" is originally slated for a 2016 premiere, but Sony made a big and surprising announcement on July 23 that the web-weaving character, and his alter ego Peter Parker, will appear on the big screen in 2018 instead. The studio also dangled a multiple villains-led movie, the "Sinister Six" on the priority list, scheduled to be shown worldwide two years from now.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, a source from Sony said that competition against other superhero movies is the main factor of the schedule bump for Andrew Garfield's "Amazing Spider-Man 3."
"If I could sum up in one thought the reason [for the slide], it's competition. Captain America being out a month before us domestically might have, to some extent, satisfied the pent-up demand for a superhero movie. And there was a lot of competition after we opened as well," The Hollywood Reporter quoted a source from Sony.
Rumors are circulating though that one of the biggest challenge for the "The Amazing Spider-Man" franchise in the past releases are the disappointing box office sales, Tech Times reported, with the two previous "Amazing Spider Man" movies grossing lesser than the three Sam Raimi-directed "Spider Man" series. Breitbart.com stated that "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" earned just around $700 million, or more than just half of its $330 million budget.
Phil Contrino of BoxOffice.com still believes in the power of "The Amazing Spider-Man" franchise, though. Contrino said: "They [Sony] are trying to build a global brand, and the property is still quite strong in a lot of the key overseas markets. When it comes to rebooting a franchise, you're never more than one movie away from really breaking out. The potential is still there for this version of Spider-Man."
