Benedict Cumberbatch Cast As Doctor Strange? Sherlock Actor Makes Appearance At Comic-con To Promote 'Penguins Of Madagascar'; Talks About Rumors He Will Play Marvel's Doctor Strange

Comic-con is known for yearly drawing in both stars, directors, and fans alike to hobnob together and talk about their upcoming film, TV, and comic book projects. One of the biggest names to descend into San Diego's 2014 Comic-con is none other than Sherlock star, Benedict Cumberbatch. The actor made an appearance at the Hilton Bayfront on Thursday afternoon (July 24).

The British actor was not there to promote The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies, in which he voices the gold-hoarding dragon Smaug. Instead, the actor was in the convention, for the very first time, to publicize his upcoming animated movie, Penguins of Madagascar.

The animated film, is based on the TV series that airs in the Nickelodeon channel. DreamWorks Animation snapped up the rights to the film version, which is going to be voiced by Cumberbatch, John Malkovich, and Ken Jeong.

According to the official plot summary from DreamWorks, "In the Penguins of Madagascar, audiences will discover the secrets of the most entertainingly mysterious birds in the global espionage game. Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private now must join forces with the chic spy organization, the North Wind, led by Agent Classified (we could tell you his name, but then... you know) to stop the cunning villain Dr. Octavius Brine from taking over the world."

But aside from this animated flick, the 38-year-old actor was asked about the juicy rumor that he has been cast as Doctor Strange in the upcoming Marvel movie of the same name.

"As far as I'm aware, even if that was the case, it couldn't work out because I'm doing a little play called Hamlet in London," Cumberbatch told MTV. "So I don't think I could even if that was in the cards. It sounds like a fantastic project. It's a shame if I miss out, but who knows?"
