Big names in the film industry, Kevin Smith, Tim Burton, and Nicholas Cage teamed up in the late 90s to create what could have been the greatest (or the worst) Superman movie ever made. Unfortunately, the production team wasn't able to get the project off the ground.
Whether fans were disappointed or antis relieved, many would-be viewers were left curious of Burton's take on the iconic superhero. Known for his dark and outlandish movies, the film's abandonment both disappointed and fascinated fans..
It looks like curiosity was not only felt by the would-be fans of the movie, the crew behind the unfinished Superman film are also reflecting on the failed production.
A trailer of the unfinished movie's documentary was released on July 24. Directed and produced by John Schnepp. It features Schnepp's interviews with Tim Burton, screenplay writer Kevin Smith, and the rest of the movie's production team, expressing regret about the death of possibly the coolest and most out-of-this-world Superman film.
"I felt like I was nailing it, so I think a lot of people do," the director shares. "If we had been able to strip through all of this chaos, I think we would have [had] an interesting movie."
The film would have starred Nicholas Cage as Superman, complete with the blue suit in some serious special effects. In the trailer, clips of Cage in costume fittings was shown along with the sketches and concept ideas for Brainiac and other villains.
"We wanted to do something that we hadn't done before without it being ridiculous," Costume designer Colleen Atwood says about the new effects-filled suit.
"Now, when you think about it: would you like to see Nic Cage in a Superman movie?" writer Kevin Smith says about the actor. "I'd be like, f***. Yes!"
What does Burton think about the canceled project? He only has one thing to say in the trailer: "Does anybody have any cyanide or anything I can take?"
Schnepp is currently calling for more people to help support the unfinished "Superman Lives" documentary. Visit www.SupportSupermanlives.com for more information on "The Death of 'Superman Lives': What Really Happened?"
