Here is the synopsis of the sequel, as published on IMDb:
"A couple are driving home to their kids when their car runs out of gas just as the Purge commences. Meanwhile, a police sergeant goes out into the streets to get revenge on the man who killed his son, and a mother and daughter run from their home after assailants destroy it. The five people meet up as they attempt to survive the night in Los Angeles."
Ben Rawson-Jones of Digital Spy gave his honest review of the sequel to "The Purge."
"The Purge: Anarchy is that rare beast - a sequel infinitely better than its predecessor. Whereas last year's original squandered the fascinating premise of a 12-hour annual period when murder is legal by turning it into generic 'home invasion' tripe, this gripping but stylistically flawed follow-up explores the fabric of this twisted society with an array of intriguing characters and scenarios."
In an article by Forbes, film critic Scott Mendelson said that the sequel is "a horror film for our time."
"The picture, again written and directed by James DeMonaco, actually has a handful of real surprises up its sleeve in the second and third acts. And since you don't have main characters trying to justify the slaughter this time around, the film can unapologetically hold up a mirror and see our sex-entitled, gun-crazy, rich-vs.-poor culture staring back at us."
The film has opened with a strong $13M.
