Cristiano Ronaldo may have been crowned as the best player in the world by Goal 50, but football veteran Robert Prosinecki says that Lionel Messi's magic will still last for more years. And Ronaldo is not at his best.
Messi was only third on that list, following Netherlands' Arjen Robben, and first placer Ronaldo. The charts suggest that Messi's career may be over together with losing the World Cup in Brazil.
Also, the arrangements for his team in Barcelona may have urged him to leave the team. Luis Suarez and Neymar may be his best competition in the spotlight for the team.
However, Prosinecki believes otherwise.
"No, I don't agree that Ronaldo has overtaken Messi," Prosinecki said to Goal.com. "What would we have said if Messi's shot in the World Cup final went in?
"I wouldn't put Messi and Ronaldo in the same sentence. They are different types of players, playing in different positions.
"Ronaldo is fantastic, but I remember a better Ronaldo, the Brazilian one I used to play with."
Prosinecki has been a player for the Croatian national football team, Red Star Belgrade, Barcelona, and Real Madrid.
He also said that if he had the chance to play with a footballer in this age, it would be the Argentine.
"I would supply him a couple of better passes than those he receives from Xavi and Andres Iniesta," Prosinecki joked about Messi. "Well, certainly better than the ones his team-mates for Argentina serve him! (Ouch!)"
"I would also like to play alongside Luis Suarez because he can create a lot by himself. Hell of a player!"
"All of a sudden Messi is worthless? Okay, he has not achieved what Maradona did with Argentina, but you must look at his team-mates," Aljosa Asanovic, Prosinecki's ex- Croatian teammate told Goal.
"Messi only had Angel Di Maria. Maradona obviously had better team-mates because he won the World Cup."
