Walt Disney's 'Guardians of the Galaxy' earned a whopping $94 million as of this weekend, allowing it to set a record for an August film screening.The movie is expected to earn more in the coming weeks.
The 3D movie had $66.4 million from international markets giving it a global debut of around $160 million, Disney announced this weekend. The movie starts the less popular characters of Disney's Marvel comic book universe. With its recent earnings 'Guardians' has surpassed the earnings of 'Lucy', which collected $18.3 million in sales in local theaters. This is based on the estimates released by Rentrak.
'Lucy' talks about a story of a woman with a super-powered brain and stars Scarlett Johansson. Meanwhile, 'Guardians' casts include Vin Diesel, Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, and Bradley Cooper.
Before the opening of the film, Walt Disney claimed that the planning of a sequel will be released in July 2017.
According to Dave Hollis, Walt Disney Studios head of distribution, said the good performance of the movie could be because of the combination of momentum that was started by the movie "Transformers: Age of Extinction." This movie got a lot of positive reviews and considerably had a good marketing.
"It started with a great movie, and certainly the marketing was inspired," he added.
So far, "Guardians" secured the title as the best showing of the year for an original property. It is apparently ahead of some high profile franchise installments such as The Amazing Spider Man, Godzilla, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Age of Extinction.
The Age of Extinction produced my Paramount also landed on headlines on Sunday for becoming the first movie shown in 2014 to hit 1$ billion in global ticket sales-and interestingly, $300 million alone came from China.
Before the weekend, the projected gross income on domestic sales of 'Guardians' was pegged at $65 million.
