Now you can pretend to be an aristocrat even for a day. As the popularity of the show, Downton Abbey surges, especially in high anticipation of Downton Abbey season 5, more and more people have become curious at the genteel world that the Crawleys live in.
Visitors to Downton Abbey's location, Highclere Castle have steadily risen since the show hit the airwaves. Banking on this popularity, the Heroes at Highclere fundraiser, through famed auction house Christie's, are offering an overnight stay at the castle to raise money for charity. The bid starts at $16,800 (£10,000), and it includes overnight stays at three rooms of the 11 on Highclere castle's first floor.
To be clear, Downton Abbey season 5 has wrapped up shooting, so it's unlikely that the auction winners will bump into any of the Crawleys and their servants during their stay.
And truth be told, the interior bedroom scenes of Downton Abbey are not actually shot in Highclere Castle, but are actually filmed at Ealing Studios in London. Still, some rooms at Highclere have been used as the Crawley's bedrooms. For example, the Arundel room is Lady Edith's room, while the Mercia bedroom is Lady Cora's room.
What's more, the winning bid not only comes with these aristocratic accommodations, but also a chance to break bread with the real owners of Highclere Castle -- the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. The auction runs only until August 14, so start bidding!
In the meantime, another revered British property has been touched with the Downton Abbey season 5 magic. Reports have surfaced that the series shot some special, secret scenes at Alnwick Castle -- which is famous for being the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the wildly popular Harry Potter movies.
Some say that the Downton Abbey Christmas special is beign shot at Alnwick, so watch out this December and perhaps we can see the Crawleys celebrating Christmas at Hogwarts.
