George Clooney and fiance Amal Alamuddin are constant fixtures in tabloids and entertainment dailies ever since news of their engagement have been confirmed. No surprise here, since the 53-year-old actor's love life has been a colorful one, and subject to much intense scrutiny. He was also thought to be one of those forever-bachelor types that serially dated women much younger than him.
That was all true, until Amal Alamuddin came along. After less than a year of dating, the elusive bachelor proposed to the 36-year-old lawyer and news and rumors have just swirled around the couple constantly. Now George Clooney and fiance Amal Alamuddin are the subject of much false news and speculation.
One of the most recent reports was the news published by The Daily Mail that the mother of Amal does not approve of their marriage. Clooney shot back by writing an opinion article on USA Today blasting the newspaper for its false news.
The Daily Mail recalled the erroneous article and apologized after the actor's op-ed piece came out. Speaking to Variety, Clooney expressed his opinion on the whole incident. "I would sit with my friends and we'd just go, 'So they just sat at a computer and just went, "OK, this is what I'm gonna say today." I mean, literally, because you just go 'There isn't literally an element of truth in this.' You just laugh, and let it go. I'm used to it after all these years. But the thing that bothers me is how much the Daily Mail is now bleeding into American press and becoming a source for some pretty legitimate newspapers. So that's the thing that worries me," Clooney shares.
It's a cause that Clooney clearly cares about, as he is an activist that has taken up many issues in the world, most notably Darfur.
The actor also shared his sentiment in the same interview with Variety about his fiancee, Amal. "I'm marrying up."
Amal is an activist, lawyer, and author, and she has done work for the United Nations.
Recently, the graduation photo of the 36-year-old surfaced on the cover of Laha, a magazine based in Beirut.
In the photo, Amal is garbed in a traditional British barrister robe, and a wig. Indeed, George Clooney seems to be "marrying up" with this woman who is fluent in both French and Arabic, and is an expert in human rights and international law, and still manages to look beautiful while wearing a George Washington style wig.
