Anne Rice The Vampire Chronicles: Original Vampire Series Revived On The Big Screen; Will Robert Downey Jr. Play Lestat?

The movie that started all our fascination with vampires will have been 20 years old this November. Anne Rice and The Vampire Chronicles are undoubtedly, the purveyors of the world's fascination with these beautiful, bloodsucking creatures, even before Twilight transformed the mythology into the stuff of young adult romance.

Interview With The Vampire came out in 1994, and it starred Tom Cruise as the vampire Lestat, with Brad Pitt and a very young Kirsten Dunst. It was directed by Neil Jordan and it was successful at the box office, grossing $224 million at the worldwide box office.

It was followed by Queen Of The Damned, starring the singer Aliyah and Stuart Townsend, but this was not quite as successful as the original movie.

And now Anne Rice and The Vampire Chronicles seem to be getting a much needed injection of new blood to revive its franchise.

According to The Wrap, producers Brian Grazer, Alex Kurtzman, and Roberto Oci are working on Universal Pictures' plans to resurrect the movies which were based on Rice's bestelling novels. Most of the copyrights to the movie versions have been secured already by the company already, even the screenplay that Anne Rice's son, Christopher wrote for her novel, Tale Of The Body Thief.

This comes after the serial and staggering popularity of works based on vampiric lore -- which include the Twlight saga, 30 Days of Night (2007), and Van Helsing (2004). On television, vampires are alive and well too, with The Vampire Diaries and True Blood among the most popular shows today.

Anne Rice and The Vampire Chronicles are not the only classic creatures that are being revived by the motion picture company. Reports have said that they will also be resurrecting Dracula Untold on the big screen.

But who will be reviving the roles of our original favorite vampires Lestat, Louis and little girl Claudia? Anne Rice herself had an opinion on this. Back in 2010, she has stated that she would very much like to see Robert Downey Jr. playing the vampire Lestat.
