The Teen Choice Awards 2014 was slammed for alleged rigging, and now even the popular boy band One Direction was cited to be in on the whole scandal.
The event introduced new social media-themed categories this year on top of their usual awards for movies, music, TV, and fashion, said a report from Washington Post.
The Teen Choice Awards 2014 rigged rumors started after the award for "Choice Web Star: Male" was given to YouTube personality Tyler Oakley (age 25 with 2.85 million Twitter followers).
Non-winners Cameron Dallas, Matt Espinosa, and Carter Reynolds took to Twitter their complaints about how the Teen Choice Awards 2014 used them for promotion. The Internet celebrities claimed they were asked by producers to encourage their fans to vote, although they discovered days after that Tyler Oakley was already chosen as a winner days before the ceremony.
Now even British boyband One Direction is said to have been involved in the rigging of the Teen Choice Awards 2014. The popular group was pictured in a video accepting their award for Choice Summer Tour, and fans noticed that they wore the same outfits as what they had on their fragrance launch.
The said perfume launch took place in New York on Tuesday, which was days before voting officially ended on Saturday.
According to Cameron Dallas' tweet: "It's funny how they told me I won the viner award 6 days before the voting ended and made the runners up still vote to tweet for them."
Matt Espinosa had a similar allegation: "Basically they picked the people almost 6 days before voting was done and used all of us for promotion".
Carter Reynolds also lashed out via Twitter: "#TCAs is rigged", adding "#TCAS2014 used all of us for promotion. What a joke."
Fans have taken to Twitter their disappointment over the alleged Teen Choice Awards 2014 rigging scandal. The hashtag "#TeensDontHaveaChoiceAwards," trended in Twitter worldwide.
Producers of the Teen Choice Awards 2014 have yet to release an official statement about the rigging allegations. However, some fans have pointed out that the producers of the Teen Choice Awards 2014 most likely just had to inform winners beforehand, to ensure that big stars would be present during the ceremony.
The tweets of Cameron Dallas and Matt Espinosa were eventually deleted, but there were plenty of screen grabs.
