The Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier bout has been postponed after "Bones" injured himself during training. Meanwhile, Alexander Gustaffson is still clamoring for a rematch against the champion.
Originally scheduled for UFC 178 on September 27th in Las Vegas, the Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier fight hype grew massively after both men were involved in a public brawl during the event's media day.
But in a report by Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting on Tuesday, the Jon Jones vs. Daniel Cormier fight has been moved to UFC 182 of January 3rd, in the same venue. The said reason was that the reigning UFC light heavyweight champion suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee during wrestling practice.
According to Helwani's report, it is not certain whether surgery will be needed. Due to the recent turn of events, the flyweight title fight between champion Demetrious Johnson and challenger Chris Cariaso will be moved as the main event bout for UFC 178.
Rightfully, challenger Daniel Cormier expressed his disappointment about the situation.
"It's very disappointing," Cormier said. "I started to train very hard. It's a little discouraging, but now I have time to get completely healthy. I don't know how hurt Jon is but we have to remember that I took this fight with a pre-existing (knee) injury."
"I could have fought through it, I just wish he would have done the same," he added.
Helwani also reported that the UFC would be offering refunds for fans that have already bought tickets to the event.
Meanwhile, former challenger Alexander Gustaffson is still clamoring for his shot at Jon Jones' title. He was originally slated to face "Bones" for the said event, but an injury during camp placed him on the sidelines.
Today, he aired out his statements through his Facebook page.
"I just heard the news that Jones is injured and the fight is rescheduled to January 3???? Until then, I will be more than ready, it was MY fight to begin with and I WANT the fight as the number 1 contender," Gustaffson wrote. "End of story!"
