Roger Federer may not have won the title during the games in Canada but he remains hopeful keeping a steady pace building his way for the US Open.
Federer has lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga with a final score 7-5, 7-6 (7/2). Although he was disappointed, his loss paved the way to reassess his performance.
According to him "I'm overall pretty happy that I made the finals in my first tournament back on hard courts. I had a few tough matches which clearly gave me a lot of information. I know what I need to work on the next few days and next few weeks, which is good to know what I need to do other than feeling lost. I wish I could have played a bit better in the final, but the facts were that it was tough for me."
He added "There were things I could have done better, but overall it was a positive week. I go away from this feeling good about my chances and also at the US Open and for the rest of the season. It's another good tournament for me, which I'm happy about."
He said that there is no excuse over his defeat saying "I just didn't feel like I was playing good enough to win. I just couldn't create enough opportunities"
On the other hand, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has his ear to ear grin planted on his face after winning the tournament. He said "I don't know what to say. It's amazing to be here in front of you guys. Anyway, thank you for everything and this will stay in my mind forever."
Tsonga let out one of the game's all-time greats in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (3), after taking out top-ranked Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray earlier in the tournament.
The Roger Cup was Tsonga's event. He has been reaping success game after game after coming back from an injury and moments of self-doubt.
He added "So you continue to believe in it. Even if, you know, people around you say you're not able to do it, you believe in it. And when you believe in something, it makes it sometimes possible."
