Chael Sonnen's drug test results were explained by "The American Gangster" himself, as the former UFC title contender revealed that he tried to get away with using performance enhancing drugs.
Chael Sonnen's drug test issues began before UFC 175 in July, wherein he was originally slated to face "The Axe Murderer" Wanderlei Silva was one of the main card bouts. However, he failed the said test twice, which eventually sent him to retirement and a two-year suspension by the Nevada Athletic Commission.
Recently, "The American Gangster" appeared on WWE superstar Chris Jericho's podcast entitled Talk Is Jericho, wherein he tackled a number of things, including the aforementioned issue.
The former UFC title contender for both the 185 and 205-pound divisions explained why he failed the tests and how ended up failing them.
"I was hit on a surprise test that was 44 days before a fight," Sonnen explained. "Generally in our business we're tested fight night, so whatever it is you're doing or you're not doing, you gotta show up clean on fight day."
Chael Sonnen also clarified that he was not on steroids or any other illegal substance, adding that he just opted not to explain it further anymore.
"I gotta make this distinction, if you ever failed a drug test, you are automatically taking something illegal and they were steroids, that's just the way it works in people's minds," he continued. "Well, first off, none of them were illegal, and none of them were steroids, but I never offered a defense."
Chael Sonnen's drug test issues are evidently hurting him now, given that he is barred from mixed martial arts competition despite his retirement. But he also revealed that he did try to beat the system and continue with his PED use.
"I didn't think I'd be tested for another 44 days," Sonnen continued. "I tried to game the system."
