Jon Jones' next fight rescheduling was explained by the champion's trainer, Alistair Greg Jackson, as "Bones" apologizes to his fans through social media.
Jon Jones' next fight against newly stated number one contender Daniel Cormier was scheduled for UFC 178 on September 27th at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. But due to an injury sustained in training camp, the fight had to be pulled off the card.
A flyweight title fight will now headline UFC 178, with Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson defending his belt against Chris Cariaso.
"Bones'" famed trainer Greg Jackson shed light on how the injury transpired, through an interview with mixed martial arts news website Sherdog.com. According to Jackson, the champion was doing wrestling drills with former heavyweight title contender Alistair Overeem.
"The Demolition Man" recently joined Jackson's camp, in his own preparations for his fight against UFC heavyweight veteran Ben Rothwell.
"It's part of the game, it wasn't like somebody went for a flying kick and dislocated [something]," Jackson explained. "Somebody went for a takedown, [Jones] stepped the wrong way, twisted the wrong way and down he went.
Jackson also clarified that the injury was purely unintentional, and was just part of the daily on-goings during training camp.
"He was fighting it, and he just twisted it. And then it just popped," Jackson continued. "Alistair's maybe 240, Jon's 220. It's not like he was working with a giant moose. It was just one of those things."
Jon Jones' next fight has now been rescheduled for UFC 182, against Daniel Cormier. Rightfully so, fans were disappointed by the recent turn of events, but unlike his usual response of "trolling" with his audience on social media, "Bones" took a more down-to-earth approach by sending out his apologies.
"I'd like to apologize to all the fans who were excited for UFC 178," Jones said through a Facebook post. "Earlier this week, I suffered an injury while training for the fight. I'm having surgery tomorrow and I'm focused on recovering as quickly as possible. I look forward to getting back in the gym and defending my title on Jan. 3 in Las Vegas."
