Xiaomi phones are unheard of in other parts of the world, but the Chinese mobile phone company is starting to make noise.

Xiaomi is now the leading cell phone vendor in China. As reported by Canalys, Xiaomi sold 15M phones, almost 2M more than Samsung's 13.2M. This would be the second time since 2011 that Samsung lost its top spot in the country.

In a statement, Canalys research analyst Jingwen Wang said: "Undoubtedly, this was helped by an anticipated, temporarily under-strength Samsung performance during the quarter," Canalys research analyst Jingwen Wang wrote in a . "But that is only half the story - Xiaomi has also executed on its strategy to grow volume shipments. It has delivered compelling products at aggressive price points ... backed by effectively targeted marketing."

It won't be long before Xiaomi phones could penetrate other foreign markets. Xiaomi is now exploring the possibilities of bringing their phones to Mexico, Thailand, Indonesia, Russia and Turkey among others.

"Xiaomi does have the potential to be a disruptive force beyond China and international vendors should take note," analyst Jessica Kwee mentioned.

So what is behind the Chinese brand's success? Simple. Making phones that look like Apple iPhones. The iPhone clones cost relatively cheaper at $200-$300.

Xiaomi phones also have a unique operating system. Called the "Miui," Xiaomi's OS is essentially Android based but is tweaked to solely cater to Xiaomi users only.
