Award-winning animator, writer, director, and producer Genndy Tartakovsky continues to do his magic as he creates more animated movies CGI technology. As a matter of fact, he also confirmed that he will be doing a classic reboot, one of which is "Popeye."
"Popeye" has been one of the most iconic cartoon characters in the early 1930s, and has been a good inspiration for many people during the time of the Great Depression. A full length movie of this cartoon was released in 1980, and now, this Spinach-munching sailorman is coming back to full screen in 3D animation.
While the said cartoon doesn’t have a go signal for production yet, Sony’s licensing division is already promoting the property with concept art at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas. Some CG tests were done on the film. However, the image used on the promotional flyer is a concept painting, which was done by Richard Daskas.
"Popeye" has taken the people’s interest since the character, created by Elzie Crisler Segar back in 1929, seems like an organic fit for Tartakovsky’s artistic sensibilities.
Many of the fans are speculating that Adam Sandler will give life to Popeye’s voice. However, Sony hasn’t announced any of the actors involved in the film just yet. It is also believed that Olive Oyl would be someone smarter, instead of a simpering lady waiting for muscle men to fight over her.
Aside from "Popeye," which is most definitely to be released in 2016, Tartakovsky will return as the director for a new movie, "Hotel Transylvania 2." Sony Pictures Animation has confirmed that a sequel to its box office vamp hit "Hotel Transylvania," aptly titled "Hotel Transylvania 2," is scheduled to be released Sept. 25, 2015.
SInce Tartakovsky is directing "Hotel Transylvania 2" at the moment, "Popeye" is supposed not to begin filming anytime soon. But then again, expect for more updates about the spinach can popping sailor. Featured voices include talents of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Selena Gomez, Fran Drescher, Kevin James, Molly Shannon, David Spade, Steve Buscemi, and Jon Lovitz.
