Will The Rock be Shazam in the next Marvel movie? It's a tossup for Dwayne Johnson as Black Adam or Shazam, according to reports.

The Rock in "Shazam" is half a surprise for Marvel fans; Dwayne Johnson is built for the part, for starters. He can also play the Boy Scout card like Captain America if he wants to, even if his previous roles varied from naïve to downright evil.

Marvel fans were caught by surprise when The Rock announced he's playing a role in "Shazam," yet another superhero to jump out of the Marvel graphic novels and into the big screen.

The latest news may seem very familiar to fans of the actor and the character, though. The Rock has expressed his intention to take on the Black Adam role back in 2007, in a similar project which was eventually scrapped, or at the very least, remained on the back burner for seven years.

Johnson and director Pete Segal were developing on a movie with The Rock as Shazam, although the latter opted to play the arch-nemesis Black Adam instead of Captain Marvel, in agreement to fan requests.

The project was considered scrapped, including Johnson and Segal's collaboration. Johnson kept the concept in mind, though, and if recent news is confirmed, "Shazam" will be realized as part of Marvel Studios' superhero initiatives, with a revived concept and reworked plot.

The Rock remains solid on his preference for Black Adam, but things have changed in his career ever since "The Scorpion King." It's also possible the fans now want him as Captain Marvel, and it isn't too farfetched he's bound to play both characters, which are practically alter egos.

Marvel Studios have yet to comment on the project, but it's a signed deal if Johnson is concerned. The Rock as Shazam should be much-anticipated, given the recent rumors Vin Diesel is also pegged for a role in an upcoming Inhumans adaptation (source: mtv.com).
