After Sony Mobile has just released its much-anticipated Android KitKat update for Xperia M2, and M2 Dual, the Japanese based company has made another unexpected announcement.

The latest Xperia M2 Aqua is the new mid-range smartphone that the company intend to release on various markets. What makes this new model unique compared to the previous ones is that it is a waterproof smartphone.

Sony Xperia M2 Aqua offers the highest waterproof technology rating (IP65/68) in a smartphone, as well as NFC (Near Field Communication) technology.

The Xperia M2 Aqua was confirmed to be pre-installed with Android 4.4 KitKat operating system out of the box. Under the hood, the Xperia M2 Aqua will run on a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB of RAM, and an Adreno 305 graphics processing unit. The device comes with an 8GB internal memory, with an option to expand up to 32GB via microSD card slot.

On the back side, the handset boasts an enhanced 8-megapxiel photo snapper with LED flash, autofocus, and full HD (1080p) video recording capability. The main camera also features Sony Exmor RS for mobile image sensor. There’s also a secondary 1.1-megapixel camera on the front for selfies and video calls.

For connectivity, the Xperia M2 Aqua offers LTE, 3G HSPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, microUSB 2.0, GPS with A-GPS, and 3.5mm audio jack.

Lastly, The phone’s 2330 mAh battery has been rated for up to 640 hours of standby time or up to 11 hours of talk time, but it could last for more when STAMINA Mode is switched on.

The Xperia M2 Aqua is said to become available starting September in multiple markets, which includes Asia Pacific, Europe, as well as in Latin America. However, this model will not arrive on the shelves of North America anytime soon. Moreover, this smartphone will be available in two color versions: black and white.

Sony, however, didn’t give any details on the Xperia M2 Aqua’s price tag. Still, the manufacturer claims that the new device is “the waterproof smartphone for everyone,” which could probably mean that it will be quite affordable.
