The fifth season of our favorite post-Edwardian drama just can't come soon enough! But as the airing of Downton Abbey's season 5 comes closer and closer, we are getting more and more details about the Crawleys and their beloved team of servants.
And now for a great piece of confirmed news about Downton Abbey season 5: we now know what will be the main event in the show's premier episode. According to the show's executive producer, Liz Trubridge, the Crawley's sprawling house will actually be on fire!
The fire actually is centered in one of the main character's bedrooms, but which one, we don't know yet. But in any case, the producer also explained how they were able to manage this bit of sorcery, given that the venue for the filming of Downton Abbey is an actual functioning castle -- Highclere Castle
In a UK television website, Trubridge explained: "The scenes were shot between the actual house [Highclere Castle, which doubles as Downton] and the studio. Because of the very nature of a stately home, you can't have smoke, because it can cause damage."
The show's tem had to recreate the look of some Highclere castle rooms in order to not ruin the castle, even though the owners had given their permission to film some smoke sequences in the galleries.
"We did some of the sequences at Highclere, and some were done in a room that we could set fire to and burn down at Ealing," Trubridge shares. She also insinuates that Branson is one of those who valiantly try to put the fire out.
This is just the latest in a series of Downton Abbey season 5 spoilers that have come our way in the weeks leading to the show's season premiere.
There were also confirmations from the show's producers about storylines that will be emphasized in the upcoming season. The showrunners weren't shy in sharing the Downton Abbey season 5 spoilers that Dame Maggie Smith's character, the Dowager Countess of Grantham, will have a more pronounced plot and storyline this season. We also learned that the show will not be cutting Lady Edith some slack this season, as she will be faced with more tragedy and heartbreak.
More news and details are sure to come in the months leading to the American Downton Abbey season 5 release date which will happen on January 4. Stay tuned!
