Shocking "Ouija" horror movie update: The original plan was to make a family adventure film. But for certain reasons, it became a heart-pounding thriller all set to elicit screams on the big screen.

Surprising as this "Ouija" horror movie update may sound, people at work behind the scenes of every movie know how variable film issues can get. Upcoming Horror Movies let viewers in on some behind-the-scenes on-goings during the production of the film.

As it turned out, the movie started development proceedings as early as 2008. There was a time when the film outfit had visualized creating an action-packed adventure movie for the whole family. With McG at the helm, the big-budgeted plan was to make a film in the same league as "Terminator Salvation," reported Upcoming Horror Movies.

Unfortunately, McG and the studio did not see eye to eye on the budget. So the project transferred from Universal to Paramount and back again. From here onwards, no "Ouija" horror movie update followed that may have explained how it came to be what it is now.

A little more than month from now, Ouija will be hitting cinemas. From the snippet Vulture shared recently, four people produced the horror film based on the Hasbro boardgame: Michael Bay, Jason Blum, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form.

The plot revolves around the horrifying consequences of playing the infamous game that allowed players to communicate with spirits. With all the scares and suspense, the film has deviated far from the family adventure type originally envisioned for it.

As Vulture put it, think of a dark version of "Jumanji" turned completely upside-down. However, this time around, no one will be around to save the ill-fated teens who dared play the game. Worse, the evil powers of the board game has conjured unearthly threats, bad enough to make the audience's blood run cold when "Ouija" haunts theaters on October 24.
