The "Ghostbusters 3" rumors started more than a decade ago, but there weren't any progress regarding this project. Finally, it seems that what we have been waiting for will finally happen. Hollywood producer Ivan Reitman, who worked on "Ghostbusters" (1984) and "Ghostbusters II" (1989), is the best person to ask about the third installment.
During an interview with Toronto Life, the 67-year old producer tried to clarify the "Ghostbusters 3" rumors. He said, "The studio is in, and we have writers working on it as we speak. We're hoping to film at the beginning of next year. Dan Aykroyd and I meet about once a month to talk about it."
The first "Ghostbusters" movie was written by Dan Aykroyd and the late Harold Ramis so we can expect some old school humor in the new sequel. However, we may not see your favorite ghost hunters on the film because Bill Murray reportedly already declined.
Many fans were disappointed when they heard about the "Ghostbusters 3" rumors. The online publication asked Ivan Reitman if Murray is joining the sequel. The Canadian producer said, He's publicly said no, but Bill and I have done six movies together, and he never says yes until literally just before the shoot."
Reitman explained, "Two TIFFs ago, we had a late dinner at Sotto Sotto, and we ate and talked until 4:30 in the morning. I told him, "I don't care if you do Ghostbusters-I mean, I'd love it if you did-but why aren't you doing leading parts for big studio films?" He said he didn't want that responsibility. He wanted to be a character actor."
If Bill Murray won't have a change of heart, then "Ghostbusters 3" may be led by an all-female cast. TV3.ie reported that Ivan Reitman is working with "Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig in this project. The producer said, ''On the drafts that I've been supervising, there's always been a very important female presence. It's nice to know that Paul is interested in the same thing. I met with him because I'll be producing whatever the new 'Ghostbusters' is."
Reitman also revealed, ''Bill is somewhat reluctant about most things. I think that affected the timing of things, to a great extent." He added, ''We all wanted him back, at the centre of it, as well. But I think there's still a great story in 'Ghostbusters' and a great conceit about it that has held true, for all these years. And I think there's a great movie to be made, with a new cast, as well.''
